What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete, effective medical system which has been in use for more than 5,000 years in treating diseases, preventing illness, and improving well-being. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized acupuncture for its effective treatment of over 200 medical conditions.
Einstein believed and proposed through scientific theory that everything consists of and is made of energy. Chinese medical theory is also based on this profound yet simple concept. Acupuncture works by restoring our energy, or Qi, to promote healing. When our Qi is balanced we maintain good health and have a greater capacity for happiness and fulfillment.
Acupuncture works through inserting sterile needles at precise acupuncture points throughout the body. The acupuncture points are located on meridians, or channels of energy. The meridians are much like a river current that that flows through the land providing sustenance and life for our planet. The meridians flow through specific areas of our body, promoting general wellness, nourishing all the cells, tissues, and organs in the body. When a blockage occurs in one part of the channel, it impedes the flow of energy in other areas of the body. Acupuncture works to remove the blockage and and restore the normal flow of Qi throughout the meridian.
What is Chinese Herbal Therapy?
Chinese herbal therapy also dates back 5,000 years. The fundamental concepts of Chinese herbal therapy were established during a time period when people were more in touch with nature and their environment. The principles of Chinese herbal therapy derive from the core elements we live in.
Chinese herbal therapy works by adjusting the body’s internal functions. Shannon prescribes Chinese herbal formulas based on each person’s individual needs and presentation. Chinese herbs can be great for treating many different conditions, from fertility issues to headaches. Each formula consists of a simple or complex combination of Chinese herbs that work together in a synergistic way to bring the body back into balance. At Madison Acupuncture & Holistic Health LLC we only carry and prescribe the safest, most effective Chinese herbs available.
What to Expect During a Treatment
Shannon spends and hour and half with each patient for initial acupuncture treatments. This enables her to get a complete picture of your health and lifestyle. She will ask questions about your emotional state, look over your medical history in depth, and talk about any specific symptoms you may have. Shannon is a holistic practitioner and looks at the mind, body, spirit, and emotional state of each patient.
After discussing all your concerns, you will lie on a comfortable massage table where she will insert sterile needles at precise acupuncture points along the body. Shannon uses a very gentle style of acupuncture, using very thin gauge needles and palpating most acupuncture points prior to inserting the needles. Most patients feel an occasional needle being inserted, but overall her needle technique is pain free. As needed, Shannon uses her intuition and other forms of energy work with patients to help facilitate the acupuncture treatment and general well being of her patients. Acupuncture treatments last roughly 20-30 minutes. Most people find acupuncture to be wonderfully relaxing.
If the patient is interested, herbal formulas can be and are often prescribed in conjunction with acupuncture. Chinese herbs are nearly always prescribed in a balanced formula.
Typically acupuncture treatments are given once a week, but it does depend on the condition your being seen for. If the condition is acute and painful, treatments may be given 1-2 times per week until the condition starts to improve. The exact duration of treatment depends on the condition, your basic level of health, and how well you respond to acupuncture.
Shannon works on a broad spectrum of health concerns, but has specific areas of expertise in treating fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, endocrine imbalances, mental health care, digestive complaints, and pain management and reduction. Through her work, Shannon is passionate about helping patients discover and uncover emotional, energetic, and physical patterns that are preventing them from living fully. She is dedicated to helping release blocks that can hold us back from living a powerful and authentic life.
